Nayarit Sculpture of a Seated Woman - PF.0549 Origin: Western Mexico Circa: 300
BC
to 300
AD Dimensions:5.5" (14.0cm) high Collection: Pre-Columbian Medium: Terracotta
This charming figure, with her detailed painted
costume, appears as any woman might be at the
opera, wearing clothes and jewels that set off her
beauty to full advantage. For what occasion
would one have gotten so dressed up in ancient
Mesoamerica? A wedding? A festival? Perhaps
she wanted to look her best through eternity. She
has certainly succeeded.
