Description |
This antique seal has been mounted in a modern
18 karat gold ring.
Mars (the Latin equivalent of the Greek Ares) was
the Roman god of war. The son of Zeus and
Hera, he was one of the twelve great deities
belonging to the second generation of Olympian
gods. Being of greater than human height he was
known to utter a terrible war cry and normally
fought on foot. On this lovely intaglio he is
shown in a more casual mode, holding a spear in
his left hand and a bundle of arrows in the right.
Supremely confidant in his power, he is seen
here naked wearing nothing but a helmet. As a
symbol of military prowess, Mars was much
admired by the ancient world for his beauty and
strength--as is perfectly demonstrated on this
intaglio.
